Review Week 4

Icons are a great way to communicate because, no matter what language you speak, the icon can help you too immediatly know what it is representing without words. This is very helpful on maps, when there is not much room for words, an icon can be used to show where a restaurant or a bathroom resides.

The public domain is basically when a piece of works copyrights have expired and they are now "publically available". This is how copyright and public domain differ.

To avoid plagarism, read the whole piece of work first and say everything in your own words and do not look at the word while you are writing or typing it out because it will not end up sounding the same. The idea can be similar but not the exact wording or style of writing. This system can work for any class.

Review Week 3

          1)  "OSHA" stands for Occupational Safety and Health Administration. It was created by congress and signed  by President Nixon on December 30, 1971. OSHA was created to prevent work-related injuries and promote good safety and health for all workplaces. It is very important to feel safe in your work environment because when you know nothing can harm you, you feel much more comfortable and can function more effectively.

           2)  Graphic Designers are always looking to send a message. They can do this in many ways including text, images, and a combination of both. First they research what message their client wishes to send, and start coming up with different ways to get that message across. Once they finish their design, it's usually helpful to get feedback. This shows them if other people are actually understanding the message, and getting suggestions is a great way to make there design even better.

           3)  When you understand the history, different cultures, and movements, it can really help you to have more variety in your work. You are not just limited to your experiences and your environment, you also can design things that portray something halfway around the world.

Intro Goals

Why did you take this class?
There were many days when my sister came home and told me about a project she was working on in graphic design. She seemed so excited when she told me about the chicago tickets, her plans for the yearbook, and her fabulous duck. I was staring at a sheet filled with electives and had no idea what to take, I saw graphic design and immediately thought of my sister and wanted to share her excitement in designing something new that I, myself, could be excited about.

What goals do you have for this class?
I want to turn all of my assignments completed and on time. In graphic design I want to create something meaningful and important that I would want to frame.

Podcast #1 (elements of design)

Podcast #1 Elements of Design
Watch the podcast. Answer the review questions below. Keep the question italicized and the answer regular.

What does it take to create good graphic design?
You must be able to convey information well that looks pleasing to the eye.
You must have an understanding of the elements and principles of design.

What is the difference between elements and principles?
Elements are the components or parts which can be isolated in any visual design while tell us how we should organize those elements.

Name the six (6) elements of design.
Line
Shape or Form
Space
Texture
Value
Color

What can lines aid in, when alone or combined with  other lines or shapes?
The readability, appearance, and message of the design.

Which lines suggest a feeling of rest? Why do you think?
Horizontal lines lines because of there relation to gravity.

Vertical lines communicate a feeling of what? Why do you think?
Loftiness:they are long and tall.

What lines suggest a feeling of movement? Why do you think?
Diaganal lines: when something is tilted it is probably not standing still, but moving.

Soft, shallow curved lines suggest what? Why do you think?
Comfort, safety, and relaxation: there subtle and delicate.

These lines suggest confusion and turbulence? Why do you think?
Deep acute curves: they loop and twist and intertwine which is confusing.

What element defines a specific area of space?
Shape.

What is the difference between two dimensional shapes and three dimensional shapes?
A two dimensional had only width and height while a three dimensional shape has  width, height and depth.

Describe the difference between geometric shapes and organic shapes?
Geometric: often structured of symmetrical shapes
Organic: are found in nature or can be man made shapes.

What are abstract shapes?
Shapes that are stylized or simplified versions of natural shapes.

Which basic shape projects an attitude of honesty or equality?
A square.

What do triangles suggest?
Action and stability.

Circles convey feelings of what?
Protection or infinity.

Describe positive space and negative space?
Positive: refers to the object and elements used in a design.
Negative: refers to the shapes around and between those objects.
What is texture?
Can refer to the actual surface of the design, it can also be implied through use of rich, layered graphics designed to give the illusion on texture in a two dimensional design.

Incorporating texture into a design can help do what?
Create a feeling of richness or depth.

What is value?
The degree of light and dark in a design.

What is another name for value?
Tone.

What can the element of color do when incorporated into a design?
Convey moods, create images, attract attention, and identify objects.
